ansas City. The Soccer Capitol of America. This magnificent kingdom of beef — founded on cattle, born in the stockyards and meatpacking plants of the 1870s, and grown into the greatest barbecue empire on earth. This is the city that gave us Charlie Parker. Yardbird. The most transcendent jazz saxophonist who ever lived. Patrick Mahomes reigns here. George Brett and Buck O'Neil before him. The great Ted Lasso is from here. And like Ted Lasso, this city, out of nowhere, became the heart of football in this nation. Starting with the KC Spurs, then the Wiz, Sporting KC, KC Current…7 major trophies reside in this glorious city of two states. The very first NWSL game was here. The first women’s soccer stadium was built here. It is more than appropriate that on July 3, almost 58 years to the day when the nascent KC Spurs hosted Pele in Municipal Stadium, that this center of American soccer will host a knockout game in a World Cup. What a journey it has been. And you’ll host that game as you host the incoming planet, who will get a chance to see a place they probably did not know enough about. I have no doubt, based on the places you love that you shared with us, that they will leave with a true knowledge of what Kansas City really is…the welcoming people, the unbelievable food, the cultural history, and yes, maybe the best BBQ they’ve ever had. As Fats Domino would say… Kansas City here I come. - Rog

The undisputed #1 recommendation from our survey — by a wide margin. Joe's is a fully operational gas station at the corner of 47th and Mission in Kansas City, Kansas that also happens to serve world-famous BBQ. Jeff and Joy Stehney started as a competition team, won eight grand championships, and took over the gas station in 1996. Nearly 30 years later, the pumps still work and the line still wraps around the building. Order the Z-Man — slow-smoked brisket, smoked provolone, and a crispy onion ring on a kaiser roll. Closed Sundays.

Fans Recommend: The Z-Man sandwich, burnt ends, ribs

"Crossroads — safest of the downtown areas, lots of fun bars and restaurants. Best sushi, bars, hotel with rooftop bars, nightlife, all of the must-see murals and more." — "Joe's KC — preferably the 47th Ave/gas station location. Get the Z-Man on toast!" — Lacey

The chef's answer to Kansas City BBQ. Founded in 2014 by Culinary Institute of America graduate Chef Rob Magee — a national competition champion — Q39 brought a whole new approach to the city's most sacred food tradition: open scratch kitchen, sliced-to-order brisket, wood-fired grill, craft cocktails, cloth napkins. It's the place you take someone who claims they don't like BBQ. Now run by Rob's wife Kelly Magee, who was named KC Restaurateur of the Year in 2024. Open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Fans Recommend: Burnt ends, burnt end burger, onion straws, wings

The lineage traces to Henry Perry, who sold barbecue from a trolley barn starting in 1908. Arthur Bryant took over his brother's operation in 1946, moved to 1727 Brooklyn in 1958, and renamed it after himself. In 1974 Calvin Trillin wrote in Playboy that "the single best restaurant in the world is Arthur Bryant's." Presidents Carter, Clinton, and Obama have all eaten here. Arthur called it a "grease house" and meant it as a compliment: Formica tables, paper plates, meat on Wonder Bread. Credited with originating burnt ends. Two blocks from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

Fans Recommend: Burnt ends. Beef sandwich. The Rich & Spicy sauce

"Arthur Bryant's — burnt ends. It's where burnt ends were first sold. One of KC's first BBQ spots." — Alec

Your most recommended KC neighborhood to wander around. The neighborhood that built itself around art — literally. In the early 1990s, Kansas City Art Institute professor Jim Leedy moved his studio into a cluster of abandoned warehouses south of downtown, and others followed. Today the Crossroads is Kansas City's cultural heartbeat: 20 walkable blocks of galleries, murals, chef-driven restaurants, breweries, speakeasies, live music venues, and design studios housed in converted industrial buildings. On the first Friday of every month, more than 70 galleries stay open late for First Fridays, one of the largest free art crawls in the country. Two KC Streetcar stops serve the neighborhood. Almost everything in this guide is either here or a short walk away.

Rolling library ladders, pressed-tin ceilings, exposed brick, a book cellar you descend into, an upstairs room that has hosted over 2,000 live events. Books are left outside on the sidewalk 24 hours a day for after-hours passersby.
